Advances in large language models (LLMs) have enabled significant capabilities in audio processing, resulting in state-of-the-art models now known as Large Audio Language Models (LALMs). However, minimal work has been done to measure audio understanding beyond automatic speech recognition (ASR). This paper closes that gap by proposing a benchmark suite, SCENEBench (Spatial, Cross-lingual, Environmental, Non-speech Evaluation), that targets a broad form of audio comprehension across four real-world categories: background sound understanding, noise localization, cross-linguistic speech understanding, and vocal characterizer recognition. These four categories are selected based on understudied needs from accessibility technology and industrial noise monitoring. In addition to performance, we also measure model latency. The purpose of this benchmark suite is to assess audio beyond just what words are said - rather, how they are said and the non-speech components of the audio. Because our audio samples are synthetically constructed (e.g., by overlaying two natural audio samples), we further validate our benchmark against 20 natural audio items per task, sub-sampled from existing datasets to match our task criteria, to assess ecological validity. We assess five state-of-the-art LALMs and find critical gaps: performance varies across tasks, with some tasks performing below random chance and others achieving high accuracy. These results provide direction for targeted improvements in model capabilities.

Adversarial perturbations exploit vulnerabilities in automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems while preserving human perceived linguistic content. Neural audio codecs impose a discrete bottleneck that can suppress fine-grained signal variations associated with adversarial noise. We examine how the granularity of this bottleneck, controlled by residual vector quantization (RVQ) depth, shapes adversarial robustness. We observe a non-monotonic trade-off under gradient-based attacks: shallow quantization suppresses adversarial perturbations but degrades speech content, while deeper quantization preserves both content and perturbations. Intermediate depths balance these effects and minimize transcription error. We further show that adversarially induced changes in discrete codebook tokens strongly correlate with transcription error. These gains persist under adaptive attacks, where neural codec configurations outperform traditional compression defenses.

We present Dynin-Omni, the first masked-diffusion-based omnimodal foundation model that unifies text, image, and speech understanding and generation, together with video understanding, within a single architecture. Unlike autoregressive unified models that serialize heterogeneous modalities, or compositional unified models that require orchestration with external modality-specific decoders, Dynin-Omni natively formulates omnimodal modeling as masked diffusion over a shared discrete token space, enabling iterative refinement under bidirectional context. Dynin-Omni adopts a multi-stage training strategy with model-merging-based modality expansion and omnimodal alignment. We evaluate Dynin-Omni across 19 multimodal benchmarks spanning language reasoning, image generation and editing, video understanding, and speech recognition and synthesis. Dynin-Omni achieves 87.6 on GSM8K, 1733.6 on MME-P, 61.4 on VideoMME, 0.87 on GenEval, and 2.1 WER on LibriSpeech test-clean, consistently outperforming existing open-source unified models while remaining competitive with strong modality-specific expert systems. These results demonstrate the potential of masked diffusion as a unified paradigm for any-to-any modeling, providing a flexible foundation for real-time omnimodal systems, unified cross-modal retrieval and generation, and embodied multimodal agents.

Audiovisual speech recognition (AVSR) combines acoustic and visual cues to improve transcription robustness under challenging conditions but remains out of reach for most under-resourced languages due to the lack of labeled video corpora for training. We propose a zero-AV-resource AVSR framework that relies on synthetic visual streams generated by lip-syncing static facial images with real audio. We first evaluate synthetic visual augmentation on Spanish benchmarks, then apply it to Catalan, a language with no annotated audiovisual corpora. We synthesize over 700 hours of talking-head video and fine-tune a pre-trained AV-HuBERT model. On a manually annotated Catalan benchmark, our model achieves near state-of-the-art performance with much fewer parameters and training data, outperforms an identically trained audio-only baseline, and preserves multimodal advantages in noise. Scalable synthetic video thus offers a viable substitute for real recordings in zero-AV-resource AVSR.

Ramsa is a developing 41-hour speech corpus of Emirati Arabic designed to support sociolinguistic research and low-resource language technologies. It contains recordings from structured interviews with native speakers and episodes from national television shows. The corpus features 157 speakers (59 female, 98 male), spans subdialects such as Urban, Bedouin, and Mountain/Shihhi, and covers topics such as cultural heritage, agriculture and sustainability, daily life, professional trajectories, and architecture. It consists of 91 monologic and 79 dialogic recordings, varying in length and recording conditions. A 10\% subset was used to evaluate commercial and open-source models for automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) in a zero-shot setting to establish initial baselines. Whisper-large-v3-turbo achieved the best ASR performance, with average word and character error rates of 0.268 and 0.144, respectively. MMS-TTS-Ara reported the best mean word and character rates of 0.285 and 0.081, respectively, for TTS. These baselines are competitive but leave substantial room for improvement. The paper highlights the challenges encountered and provides directions for future work.

Nepal Bhasha (Newari), an endangered language of the Kathmandu Valley, remains digitally marginalized due to the severe scarcity of annotated speech resources. In this work, we introduce NwÄchÄ MunÄ, a newly curated 5.39-hour manually transcribed Devanagari speech corpus for Nepal Bhasha, and establish the first benchmark using script-preserving acoustic modeling. We investigate whether proximal cross-lingual transfer from a geographically and linguistically adjacent language (Nepali) can rival large-scale multilingual pretraining in an ultra-low-resource Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) setting. Fine-tuning a Nepali Conformer model reduces the Character Error Rate (CER) from a 52.54% zero-shot baseline to 17.59% with data augmentation, effectively matching the performance of the multilingual Whisper-Small model despite utilizing significantly fewer parameters. Our findings demonstrate that proximal transfer within South Asian language clusters serves as a computationally efficient alternative to massive multilingual models. We openly release the dataset and benchmarks to digitally enable the Newari community and foster further research in Nepal Bhasha.

Audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR) is an extension of ASR that incorporates visual signals. Current AVSR approaches primarily focus on lip motion, largely overlooking rich context present in the video such as speaking scene and on-screen text. To tackle such CAVSR (AVSR including rich visual Context), we propose VASR designed to "see" and reason the visual context to improve speech recognition. Specifically, we construct an Audio-Visual Chain-of-Thought (AV-CoT) that explicitly enforces intermediate cross-modal grounding between acoustic signals and visual evidence. This evidence-driven reasoning mitigates the "single-modality dominance" problem, where models either over-rely on visual context or fail to utilize it. Besides, to address the data scarcity, we construct and release a corresponding data pipeline and test set. Experiments show that AV-CoT effectively mitigates the single-modality dominance, achieving state-of-the-art performance in CAVSR. The project is open-sourced.

We present Artoo, a learned acoustic communication system for robots that replaces hand-designed signal processing with end-to-end co-trained neural networks. Our system pairs a lightweight text-to-speech (TTS) transmitter (1.18M parameters) with a conformer-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) receiver (938K parameters), jointly optimized through a differentiable channel. Unlike human speech, robot-to-robot communication is paralinguistics-free: the system need not preserve timbre, prosody, or naturalness, only maximize decoding accuracy under channel distortion. Through a three-phase co-training curriculum, the TTS transmitter learns to produce distortion-robust acoustic encodings that surpass the baseline under noise, achieving 8.3% CER at 0 dB SNR. The entire system requires only 2.1M parameters (8.4 MB) and runs in under 13 ms end-to-end on a CPU, making it suitable for deployment on resource-constrained robotic platforms.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has benefited from advances in pretrained speech and language models, yet most systems remain constrained to monolingual settings and short, isolated utterances. While recent efforts in context-aware ASR show promise, two key challenges persist: limited multilingual support and the absence of principled alignment between speech and contextual representations. In this paper, we introduce a context-aware multilingual ASR framework that supports diverse languages and accents while preserving the modularity of pretrained models. Our approach combines a frozen speech encoder and a decoder-only language model via a lightweight projection module, allowing structured context prompts, including dialogue history and biasing words, to guide transcription. To improve interaction between speech and context, we employ a contrastive learning objective that aligns their representations in a shared embedding space. Evaluations on over 1,500 hours of real-world conversational speech across 11 languages and 5 English dialects show that contextual input consistently improves recognition quality. Contrastive alignment provides additional gains when applied to different context types, with an overall performance gain of over 5%. These results highlight the importance of both contextual modeling and cross-modal alignment in multilingual ASR.

Speech foundation models struggle with low-resource Pacific Indigenous languages because of severe data scarcity. Furthermore, full fine-tuning risks catastrophic forgetting. To address this gap, we present an empirical study adapting models to real-world Pacific datasets. We investigate how data volume and linguistic features affect adaptation success. Specifically, we evaluate strategies including Full Fine-Tuning and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). Additionally, we analyze a continual learning framework for sequentially acquiring multiple languages. We demonstrate that adapting to these distant languages causes severe internal representational drift. Consequently, these models face a strict plasticity and stability dilemma. While LoRA adapts well initially, it suffers from catastrophic forgetting during sequential learning. Ultimately, this study highlights the urgent need for robust adaptation strategies tailored to underrepresented languages.

Long-form speech recognition with large encoder-decoder models such as Whisper often exhibit hallucinations, repetition loops, and content omissions. These errors can accumulate and be further amplified when the previous segment's transcription is used as decoding context. We propose Whisper-CD, a training-free contrastive decoding framework that contrasts clean-audio logits against negative logits computed from three acoustically motivated perturbations: Gaussian noise injection, silence signal, and audio temporal shift. We aggregate these negatives via the log-sum-exp operator, building a unified multi-negative objective for token-by-token decoding. Across five English long-form benchmarks, Whisper-CD reduces WER by up to 24.3pp on CORAAL and shows 48% faster token generation throughput than beam search. Because Whisper-CD operates purely at inference time, it can be applied as a drop-in replacement to already-deployed Whisper systems without retraining.

Modern ASR systems are typically trained on large-scale pseudo-labeled, in-the-wild data spanning multiple domains. While such heterogeneous data benefit generalist models designed for broad deployment, they pose challenges for specialist models targeting specific domains: specialist models lack the capacity to learn from all available data, and one must pay closer attention to addressing the mismatch between training and test conditions. In this work, we study targeted data selection as a strategy to address these challenges, selecting relevant subsets from 100k hours of in-the-wild training data to optimize performance on target domains. We represent speech samples using embeddings that capture complementary characteristic--speaker attributes, phonetic content, and semantic meaning--and analyze how relevance and diversity along these axes when performing data selection affect downstream ASR performance. Our experiments with CTC-based Conformer models show that training on a strategically selected 5% subset can exceed the performance of models trained on the full dataset by up to 36.8% relative WER reduction on target domains.

Commercial AI scribes cost \$99-600 per physician per month, operate as opaque systems, and do not return data to institutional infrastructure, limiting organizational control over data governance, quality improvement, and clinical workflows. We developed Berta, an open-source modular scribe platform for AI-enabled clinical documentation, and deployed a customized implementation within Alberta Health Services (AHS) integrated with their existing Snowflake AI Data Cloud infrastructure. The system combines automatic speech recognition with large language models while retaining all clinical data within the secure AHS environment. During eight months (November 2024 to July 2025), 198 emergency physicians used the system in 105 urban and rural facilities, generating 22148 clinical sessions and more than 2800 hours of audio. The use grew from 680 to 5530 monthly sessions. Operating costs averaged less than \$30 per physician per month, a 70-95% reduction compared to commercial alternatives. AHS has since approved expansion to 850 physicians. This is the first provincial-scale deployment of an AI scribe integrated with existing health system infrastructure. By releasing Berta as open source, we provide a reproducible, cost-effective alternative that health systems can adapt to their own secure environments, supporting data sovereignty and informed evaluation of AI documentation technology.

Punctuation restoration is essential for improving the readability and downstream utility of automatic speech recognition (ASR) outputs, yet remains underexplored for Persian despite its importance. We introduce PersianPunc, a large-scale, high-quality dataset of 17 million samples for Persian punctuation restoration, constructed through systematic aggregation and filtering of existing textual resources. We formulate punctuation restoration as a token-level sequence labeling task and fine-tune ParsBERT to achieve strong performance. Through comparative evaluation, we demonstrate that while large language models can perform punctuation restoration, they suffer from critical limitations: over-correction tendencies that introduce undesired edits beyond punctuation insertion (particularly problematic for speech-to-text pipelines) and substantially higher computational requirements. Our lightweight BERT-based approach achieves a macro-averaged F1 score of 91.33% on our test set while maintaining efficiency suitable for real-time applications. We make our dataset (this https URL) and model (this https URL) publicly available to facilitate future research in Persian NLP and provide a scalable framework applicable to other morphologically rich, low-resource languages.

Recent studies have demonstrated that incorporating auxiliary information, such as speaker voiceprint or visual cues, can substantially improve Speech Enhancement (SE) performance. However, single-channel methods often yield suboptimal results in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions, when there is high reverberation, or in complex scenarios involving dynamic speakers, overlapping speech, or non-stationary noise. To address these issues, we propose a novel Visual-Informed Neural Beamforming Network (VI-NBFNet), which integrates microphone array signal processing and deep neural networks (DNNs) using multimodal input features. The proposed network leverages a pretrained visual speech recognition model to extract lip movements as input features, which serve for voice activity detection (VAD) and target speaker identification. The system is intended to handle both static and moving speakers by introducing a supervised end-to-end beamforming framework equipped with an attention mechanism. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed audiovisual system has achieved better SE performance and robustness for both stationary and dynamic speaker scenarios, compared to several baseline methods.

Recently, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems (e.g., Whisper) have achieved remarkable accuracy improvements but remain highly sensitive to real-world unseen data (data with large distribution shifts), including noisy environments and diverse accents. To address this issue, test-time adaptation (TTA) has shown great potential in improving the model adaptability at inference time without ground-truth labels, and existing TTA methods often rely on pseudo-labeling or entropy minimization. However, by treating model confidence as a learning signal, these methods may reinforce high-confidence errors, leading to confirmation bias that undermines adaptation. To overcome these limitations, we present ASR-TRA, a novel Test-time Reinforcement Adaptation framework inspired by causal intervention. More precisely, our method introduces a learnable decoder prompt and utilizes temperature-controlled stochastic decoding to generate diverse transcription candidates. These are scored by a reward model that measures audio-text semantic alignment, and the resulting feedback is used to update both model and prompt parameters via reinforcement learning. Comprehensive experiments on LibriSpeech with synthetic noise and L2 Arctic accented English datasets demonstrate that our method achieves higher accuracy while maintaining lower latency than existing TTA baselines. Ablation studies further confirm the effectiveness of combining audio and language-based rewards, highlighting our method's enhanced stability and interpretability. Overall, our approach provides a practical and robust solution for deploying ASR systems in challenging real-world conditions.

As advancements in technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Speaker Verification (SV), and Text-to-Speech (TTS) lead to increased usage of intelligent voice assistants, the demand for privacy and personalization has escalated. In this paper, we introduce a multi-task learning framework for personalized, customizable open-vocabulary Keyword Spotting (PCOV-KWS). This framework employs a lightweight network to simultaneously perform Keyword Spotting (KWS) and SV to address personalized KWS requirements. We have integrated a training criterion distinct from softmax-based loss, transforming multi-class classification into multiple binary classifications, which eliminates inter-category competition, while an optimization strategy for multi-task loss weighting is employed during training. We evaluated our PCOV-KWS system in multiple datasets, demonstrating that it outperforms the baselines in evaluation results, while also requiring fewer parameters and lower computational resources.

Training automatic speech recognition (ASR) models increasingly relies on decentralized federated learning to ensure data privacy and accessibility, producing multiple local models that require effective merging. In hybrid ASR systems, while acoustic models can be merged using established methods, the language model (LM) for rescoring the N-best speech recognition list faces challenges due to the heterogeneity of non-neural n-gram models and neural network models. This paper proposes a heterogeneous LM optimization task and introduces a match-and-merge paradigm with two algorithms: the Genetic Match-and-Merge Algorithm (GMMA), using genetic operations to evolve and pair LMs, and the Reinforced Match-and-Merge Algorithm (RMMA), leveraging reinforcement learning for efficient convergence. Experiments on seven OpenSLR datasets show RMMA achieves the lowest average Character Error Rate and better generalization than baselines, converging up to seven times faster than GMMA, highlighting the paradigm's potential for scalable, privacy-preserving ASR systems.

This paper presents our solution for the DL Sprint 4.0, addressing the dual challenges of Bengali Long-Form Speech Recognition (Task 1) and Speaker Diarization (Task 2). Processing long-form, multi-speaker Bengali audio introduces significant hurdles in voice activity detection, overlapping speech, and context preservation. To solve the long-form transcription challenge, we implemented a robust audio chunking strategy utilizing whisper-timestamped, allowing us to feed precise, context-aware segments into our fine-tuned acoustic model for high-accuracy transcription. For the diarization task, we developed an integrated pipeline leveraging this http URL and WhisperX. A key contribution of our approach is the domain-specific fine-tuning of the Pyannote segmentation model on the competition dataset. This adaptation allowed the model to better capture the nuances of Bengali conversational dynamics and accurately resolve complex, overlapping speaker boundaries. Our methodology demonstrates that applying intelligent timestamped chunking to ASR and targeted segmentation fine-tuning to diarization significantly drives down Word Error Rate (WER) and Diarization Error Rate (DER), in low-resource settings.

Recent advances in automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speech enhancement have led to a widespread assumption that improving perceptual audio quality should directly benefit recognition accuracy. In this work, we rigorously examine whether this assumption holds for modern zero-shot ASR systems. We present a systematic empirical study on the impact of Segment Anything Model Audio by Meta AI, a recent foundation-scale speech enhancement model proposed by Meta, when used as a preprocessing step for zero-shot transcription with Whisper. Experiments are conducted across multiple Whisper model variants and two linguistically distinct noisy speech datasets: a real-world Bengali YouTube corpus and a publicly available English noisy dataset. Contrary to common intuition, our results show that SAM-Audio preprocessing consistently degrades ASR performance, increasing both Word Error Rate (WER) and Character Error Rate (CER) compared to raw noisy speech, despite substantial improvements in signal-level quality. Objective Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio analysis on the English dataset confirms that SAM-Audio produces acoustically cleaner signals, yet this improvement fails to translate into recognition gains. Therefore, we conducted a detailed utterance-level analysis to understand this counterintuitive result. We found that the recognition degradation is a systematic issue affecting the majority of the audio, not just isolated outliers, and that the errors worsen as the Whisper model size increases. These findings expose a fundamental mismatch: audio that is perceptually cleaner to human listeners is not necessarily robust for machine recognition. This highlights the risk of blindly applying state-of-the-art denoising as a preprocessing step in zero-shot ASR pipelines.
